Okay, so this is a different post than you might expect on this site, but it’s the holiday season and my two boys are super jazzed to make their wish lists. This year, tops on their list for a second year in a row are Nerf guns and Legos. And I’m a little embarrassed to tell you, but we have a LOT of both in our home already!
The Nerf gun was a hard sell for me. I consider myself a pacifist by definition, that is I don’t believe that war is justifiable. I just don’t. And guns kill people. That’s always been hard for me. So when my boys wanted guns it was a difficult thing for me to accept. We did wooden swords, bows and arrows, we even made regulation approved boffering weapons. So why were play guns so hard for me? Because play guns don’t replicate the reality of guns. If you get hit with a wooden sword, it hurts! When you are shooting a bow and arrow, everyone is wearing protective eye gear and respecting the target area. Even boffering weapons hurt a bit if you get hit! But when you get hit with a Nerf dart, no hurt, no wound, no reality.
But then I was reminded by a Momma I really respect, who also has two boys, that we grownups think about these things differently than our children. They are just having fun, they aren’t making moral choices about killing. I thought about that for awhile and I also thought about how I wanted to raise my children to make decisions for themselves and I wanted to respect their decisions. So, several years ago, my boys each got their first Nerf gun for Christmas and oh they were so excited! I watched them play and realized they really were just having fun. After several more Nerf guns came into the home for birthday and Christmas presents and the boys started saving their money to buy even more guns, I started joining in on the fun. And guess what? I LOVED IT! And I still think that war is unjustifiable and I still think that we should have tougher gun laws. But I also think that my boys really enjoy playing with these toys and so do their friends. And their friends love it that I play with them!
So this year, they are really hoping for Laser Tag guns and I’ve done my research. I want to get them a 4-pack so we can all play together or when they have friends over, they can all play. Here’s what I decided to purchase and why as well as what I looked at, but passed on and why.
Enjoy your shopping, and may you have fun with your children, even if it’s not what you would have done when you were a child. Embrace the things they love and learn to play with them. You might even find, like I did, that the things they enjoy really are enjoyable! Happy Holidays!
The Nerf Lazer Tag Phoenix LTX Tagger 2-Pack has two guns as the name implies. We are getting two sets of these as the price is right. There are settings for solo play or you can customize whether you are on team 1 or team 2. The Laser Tag gun has audible feedback and can lock onto or track the other player who is holding the second gun which adds to the fun and when the other party is hit their gun lights up and vibrates. There are options for attachable scope to improve your accuracy and other parts to add to the fun with these guns that can be added at a later date.
The Laser Tag Set for Kids Multiplayer 4 Pack was a set I considered. It had great reviews, is well built, and I love that there are 4 different colors. I decided on the Nerf 2 pack for two reasons, first it was slightly cheaper and second, we have friends with the Nerf guns already so we can easily play with them if we also have Nerf. They will be compatible with each other and since we are all about playing together, that was a huge selling point for us! If those two points weren’t issues for us, I probably would have chosen this 4 pack.
The Nerf Lazer Tag Blasters Gift Set Bundle – 4 Pack was something that I also seriously considered. I really like the extra perks with the iphone feature, but that isn’t necessary for my kids. The reviews I read said once that option was mounted it was hard to get off. It also only works for older iPhones, not androids. Those weren’t the deciding features for us though. I couldn’t find any evidence that they would absolutely work with the Phoenix LTX and as I mentioned, we wanted to be compatible so we could play with friends.
The Lazertag Multiplayer Battle System would probably have been my boys’ firs choice, but at a significant jump in price point, we didn’t opt for this set, especially because we wanted 4 guns. The add-ons definitely look amazing and I’m sure are a lot of fun, but for our family, it was too much money.
I hope the reviews are helpful and if you “aim” to get lazer guns, HAVE FUN! Let me know what you chose in a comment below!
